Meet Your Teacher

My name is Sarah Skolnik and I graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and received a Washington State Teaching Certificate.  I then completed a Master's degree in Reading/Language Arts at the University of Houston, TX in 1998 while at the same time teaching preschool and reading to kindergarten students.  I have also earned a California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential.  I was a second grade teacher and taught at Garden Road Elementary in Poway, California and at Marshall Elementary in Vancouver, Washington. I have always been extremely interested in the area of developmental reading. I was an Impact Teacher for 6 years at Painted Rock Elementary in Poway helping students who needed extra support in in their learning.  It was then that I was introduced to the program SIPPS.  I have worked with many reading programs but have been especially excited about the results of this reading program. I hope to instill in students the excitement and love of reading! If you are interested, please contact me as I would love to help your young reader learn and grow!

What is Young Reader Support?

Does your child struggle with Reading?  Then you have come to the right place. Reading is a developmental process, and with necessary instruction and support, every child will experience success. Implementing the program SIPPS, I provide intensive one-on-one instruction to help your young reader succeed and grow.  Instruction is targeted to students in K-3rd grade who require extra support or a jump start in reading. Your reader will receive an effective diagnostic assessment that gives them targeted instruction at their point of need.  Once correctly placed in the program, your reader enjoys interactive lessons that include targeted instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, and sight words.  With each lesson, readers receive instruction in proven learning techniques that solidify their reading foundation.

A Comprehensive Reading Program

SIPPS - Research-Based Skills Instruction

The SIPPS (Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words) curriculum provides a structured literacy approach to foundational skills instruction through explicit instructional routines focused on phonological awareness, spelling-sounds, and sight words, with immediate application to reading connected to text and spelling. As young readers acquire these skills, they become fluent and independent readers.

Why Are These Skills Important to a Young Reader?

Phonological awareness is an individual's awareness that sounds create words. Phonics is the ability to manipulate these sounds to decode unfamiliar words. Sight words are common words we use daily, and because they do not always follow the rules of phonics, they require sight recognition. These core building blocks of reading combined support fluency.  Fluency is when one can read easily and smoothly.  This leads to comprehension, which is when a reader can process and analyze literature.

Individualized Reading Plan

I like to incorporate my own expertise and experience into the SIPPS reading curriculum to provide a more comprehensive learning experience for my students.  This individualized approach ensures that lessons are precisely tailored to meet the unique needs of your child, fostering an environment where they can thrive at their own pace. As your child's reading skills develop, they'll not only grasp the fundamentals but will also start to enjoy reading. This growing interest in reading helps cultivate their imagination and knowledge, laying a solid foundation for ongoing learning.
